Me: Should I get my tongue pierced first, or my belly button?
Friend: Do them both!
Me: Or should I do my ear cartilage?
Friend: DO IT ALL!
In my 20’s I loved riding my motorcycle, baking, cuddling my pets, meeting up with my friends for dinner at 9:00, and having conversations like the above.
Present day me still loves baking, cuddling with my pets, and a speedy vehicle (hello, Macan Turbo), but now I have dinner at 5:00 most nights, and aside from single ear lobes, those piercings are long gone.
This 7-minute TED Talk by Dan Gilbert talks about how “people vastly underestimate the amount of change they will experience in the next ten years.” It’s a fascinating study that looks at personality traits, values, and things like your favorite band. People thought the best friend they had today would still be their best friend in 10 years, but for many, that wasn’t the case.
It’s not too late to be who you want to be.
That doesn’t mean there’s an ideal version of you you’re trying to reach, but it means there’s space to grow.
Dan Gilbert’s research says, “Human beings are works in progress that mistakenly think they’re finished. The person you are right now is as transient, as fleeting, and as temporary as all the people you’ve ever been.”
