Manifest: Cambridge Dictionary’s Word of the Year

Did you hear that Cambridge Dictionary just named “Manifest” their Word of the Year?

Why? Because millions of people are excited, or at least curious about, the powerful idea of turning dreams into reality.

But here’s the thing: manifesting isn’t magic—it’s backed by science.

Let’s break it down, focusing on two key players in your brain:

Reticular Activating System (RAS):

Your RAS is a network of neurons in your brainstem that filters the massive amount of sensory input you receive. It prioritizes what reaches your conscious awareness based on your goals, beliefs, and past experiences.

Confirmation Bias:

This is your brain’s tendency to favor information that supports your existing beliefs, while downplaying or ignoring anything that contradicts them. It’s a cognitive bias that affects how you interpret and act on information.

Manifesting starts with getting clear on and visualizing your desired outcome. By thinking about your desired outcome, you’re essentially training your RAS to scan your environment for relevant information. This heightened awareness can increase your chances of finding resources or taking actions that align with your goals.

For example, if you’re trying to manifest a new job, your RAS might make you more likely to notice job postings or conversations that could lead to the perfect opportunity—things you might’ve overlooked otherwise.

Meanwhile, Confirmation Bias works in tandem, reinforcing your belief in your ability to succeed. When you believe success is possible, you’ll naturally notice evidence supporting that belief and filter out doubts. However, the opposite is also true: if you believe a particular dream isn’t possible for you, you’ll notice reasons to validate that belief, sabotaging your ability to manifest.

tl;dr: Your RAS ensures you notice the opportunities, while Confirmation Bias validates that pursuing those opportunities aligns with your beliefs and goals—this creates a positive, upward loop.

No magic wands or lucky stars—just your brain working its brilliance.
